Focus on Total Wellbeing Amidst COVID-19

Focusing on your overall health and wellbeing should always be of high importance, but now more than ever, it’s crucial to pay attention to what your needs are to either improve or maintain your health. While we all continue to learn how to cope with a global pandemic, it’s important to not only focus on your physical health, but your emotional, financial and social wellbeing as well. At Faith Technologies, we focus on caring for the whole person: mind, body, and soul.

The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted all of us in some way and has presented various challenges. One of them may be adjusting to a new routine, whether because you are now working from home or just staying home more often and avoiding public places. This new routine could also mean you are moving less, eating less healthy, experiencing emotional or financial stress or having trouble getting a good night’s sleep.

At Faith Technologies, we are working together with our workplace wellness partner, Virgin Pulse, to provide various wellbeing resources to our employees and their families to be able to support their whole selves. Virgin Pulse provides valuable resources on all aspects of wellness including nutrition, physical activity, financial wellness, mental health, stress management and social health.

Beyond utilizing your company wellness program, it’s important to find activities or ideas that may work for you to improve your health and wellness during these challenging times:

  • Eat Nutritiously: Being at home more may make it easier to overeat or indulge in more comfort foods. Ensure your pantry and fridge are stocked with nutritious snacks so that you aren’t tempted by junk food. Make time to meal prep healthy meals each week. Wash up fruits and vegetables as soon as you bring them home from the store so that they are ready to eat for an easy, quick snack or addition to a meal. Check out BudgetBytes for delicious meal-prep recipes while keeping budget top of mind.
  • Move More: You may find yourself sitting more than you used to if you are at home more often. Scheduling consistent moving breaks in your day is important for your overall health. Take stretching breaks, take a walk around the block or stand during your virtual meetings. Sitting too much can cause obesity, heart disease, high blood pressure and back pain, among others. Adding physical activity to your day can support many other aspects of your life such as reducing stress, sleeping better and maintaining a healthy weight. HelpGuide has some great ideas to get moving, along with free resources and ways to fit in movement whether you are inside or out!
  • Reduce Stress: Stress and anxiety are extremely high for some people right now, and it’s important to find ways to reduce some of that stress. Some ideas to try include practicing meditation or mindfulness, deep breathing, going for a walk or run, coloring (yes, I said coloring!), taking a bath, reading a book or listening to nature.
  • Get Sleep: Sleep is important for your overall health, as well as supporting your immune system. The Sleep Foundation has issued special sleep guidelines during COVID-19 including setting a schedule and routine, being mindful of screen time, staying active and the importance of light-based cues.
  • Explore: Although many events are canceled, there are still safe ways to get out and enjoy some things outside the home. Try visiting a local nature center, go for a hike, rent a kayak, find a new bike trail, go camping or visit the natural wonders of your state. Visit your state’s travel website to explore areas you’ve never seen and try something new!
  • Financial Wellbeing: The coronavirus pandemic is causing nearly 9 in 10 Americans to feel anxious about money, according to a survey from the National Endowment for Financial Education. Budgeting apps such as Mint, PocketGuard or GoodBudget can all assist with keeping your finances on track.

During these uncertain times, your health and wellbeing are not only important, they’re essential. When you take care of you, it allows you to be the best version of yourself and allows you to be there to support and take care of others around you. As others have said during this pandemic, we are not all in the same boat, but we are all in the same storm. Continue to take care of yourself and ask for help when you need it.
