Evaluating Your NFPA 70E Safety Program Goals
Faith Technologies recently hosted a customer appreciation workshop aimed at supporting our customer’s needs with electrical safety. Since 2002, we have found that these workshops are very helpful to employees in all industry sectors including food processing, healthcare, heavy industrial, and commercial.
Two topics of discussion emerged from this recent workshop: an increased need to implement and support workplace electrical safety, and the Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) directive.
Supporting Workplace Electrical Safety: OSHA actively enforces the 1910 Sub Part S 300 to promote electrical safety. Employees are responsible for using the NFPA 70E code book to ensure compliance. While the code book can appear to be open-ended at times, we identified ways to correctly address this code. We performed an in class break-out session on the proper use of energized work permits and how they pertain to daily operations in most facilities, etc.
OSHA’s Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Directive: This is something that has not been clearly defined since 2000, and now OSHA has given employers new guidelines on what they are required to provide employees to ensure safety in the electrical field. For example, the PPE clothing changes to meet the needs of that piece of equipment. Safety restrictions are very important to follow when working in any hazard category. Using proper protection ensures that the company is following code regulations, and the safety of the employee is in their best interest. Each label should specify the PPE required for that piece of equipment.
We had great participation and much discussion on what should be done to maintain compliance in the workplace. We also reviewed examples of two essential documents employees should have on file: company safety policies and contractor qualification programs.
As a partner in safety with all of our customers, Faith Technologies will continue to provide value-added workshops on electrical safety. It is our goal to host these events at various locations throughout the Midwest. Stay tuned for further information.
