How To Prepare for a Job Interview

Getting the call that your resume was chosen and being asked to come in for an interview can be really exciting, but it can also be nerve-wracking. That first interview, when you meet your potential employer face-to-face, is a big moment. First impressions are important, and you want to make sure yours is a good one.

Here are a few ways to leave a lasting impression that can help you land your dream job.

  • Focus on basic personal hygiene. Take a shower, shave, get a haircut, style your hair, brush your teeth, and wear deodorant. Go light on any body spray or perfume; you don’t want your scent to overpower the room.
  • Dress to impress. When interviewing, it’s recommended that you dress one level above the position you’re interviewing for. If you’re applying for an office job, a jacket/ tie may be appropriate. If you’re interviewing for a field position, nice jeans (with no holes or stains), clean work boots and a button-down shirt or sweater would be appropriate for an interview.
  • Research the company so that you can be knowledgeable about the history of the company and what they do. This will show the potential employer that you want the job and are willing to put in the work to get it.
  • Think through some of the questions you may be asked, and come up with ideas of how you would like to respond. The worst thing you can say to a common question is “I don’t know” or “I have to think about that.” Interviewers typically ask similar questions, and it is easy to find examples to help you prepare.
  • Bring a notebook, pen, several copies of your resume and any certifications you want to talk about. Being overly prepared is always better than being under-prepared, and again, speaks to your level of commitment to securing the position.
  • Have several questions you want to ask the employer. After they are done interviewing you, it’s your opportunity to interview them. Ask questions about the position, the organization, or the department you will be working in. This is not the time to ask about pay or benefits; that should wait until you have an offer in hand. This is also not the time to ask what the company does (see earlier bullet).
  • Use a good, firm handshake and make eye contact. This displays confidence and professionalism.
