What Questions Should You Expect in a Job Interview?

You’ve made it to the interview process – congratulations! That means you passed round one (or at least looked good on paper) and potentially round two if you had a phone interview. A resume is a foot in the door, but the real test is when you come face-to-face with your potential employer. As I noted in an earlier blog post, appearance, body language and demeanor all play a role in whether or not you make it to that next level, but possibly the most important piece is what you say during the interview.

Below are a few questions you can expect to be asked in an interview, and what type of answers employers are typically looking for.

Why are you looking to leave your current position?  This is a question that is bound to come up, and the answer you give says a lot about you. If you respond with all the things your current employer does wrong, it can make you sound difficult to work with and like you complain a lot. Approach this question from the standpoint of your qualifications: why you are not able to advance in your career, how you want to be challenged in this new role, and how you want to bring your skills to a company that will give you room to grow and advance as a professional and as a part of a team.

What do you like about your current or last job?  Don’t say, “The money.” Companies are looking for employees who can bring value to their company. Pay is important, certainly, but you need to offer something to your potential employer. You may say that you like the type of work you do, the culture of a company, the people who work there – these are all good answers to why you chose to work where you do, and allow the potential employer to see what you value in a company.

How much are you hoping to get paid here?  In this response you want to come off as looking to be a part of a team, not just after a paycheck. Plan to explain and have examples of why you’re worth what you’re asking for. If the company is not willing to meet your salary request, inquire about opportunities for additional training to improve your skills and get to the pay level you’re looking for. Lastly, know where you draw the line. Don’t accept a position if you know you don’t want it; that will not work out well for you or the potential employer.

One final thought – make sure you have questions in mind to ask the potential employer. Interviews are a two-way street, and you should want to learn things about the company as much as they want to learn about you. Questions such as, “What does a typical day look like in this position?” or “What opportunities are there for advancement within your company?” are great ways to learn more and show interest in a new career.

You’ve worked hard to get this interview. Being prepared to answer questions and ask some of your own can give you an advantage over other applicants. Good luck!
